Parelli Natural Horsemanship

At Fresh Steps EAP, we use Parelli Natural Horsemanship (PNH) with all of our horses. The decision to do this was made after years of working with some of our horses, and finding that using the same techniques with all horses improved our outcomes with the horses. PNH is a perfect fit for Fresh Steps because it recognizes the horse as a sentient being, and teaches horses to listen and respond to people rather than become accustomed to ignoring most of what we do.

Our herd had changed for the better since the implementation of this core concept, as the horses are very friendly, and patient with clients. This does not mean that the horses are not allowed to be themselves, rather, it allows the horses to respond in a natural way to clients, and most importantly, to keep listening.

We have horses that have been donated or rescued, and these horses in particular have really responded well to this form of horsemanship. If you have horses yourself, or would like to be a volunteer at Fresh Steps, you are encouraged to join Parelli Connect, which is an online network with the first level of horsemanship available on demand. The first 30 days are free, but you will find that you enjoy the activities and support you recieve. There is more information on the site and the corresponding Savvy Club site to keep you busy for months!

Overall, PNH has changed the way we look at problems, and helps us develop treatment plans that are meaningful, activities that are relevant, and get participants the skills they need to succeed not only in the arena, but outside it as well.
